^Lot 196 John Wayne Jacket from Pittsburgh

This double-breasted suit jacket was worn by the character "Charles 'Pittsburgh' Markham," portrayed by legendary actor John Wayne, in the 1942 motion picture, "Pittsburgh." The suit is constructed of gray wool with slit pockets at the waist and was custom tailored for Mr. Wayne's use on the film by Phelps Terkel of California. The interior jacket pocket has the original tailoring label sewn inside with "John Wayne," production date "4/12/41" and assorted tailoring information clearly typed.

Mr. Wayne first appears wearing the jacket during the scene in the office of the Miners Union President when Markham unsuccessfully tries to convince the man that he's had a change of heart and wants to deal fairly with union laborers again. After Markham runs into a streak of bad luck and loses his fortune, he again appears wearing this jacket when leaving the office building he used to own, as a painter inscribes the name of the new owner on the facade. He is also seen wearing the jacket when Markham is talking with his old friend "Doc Powers" (Frank Craven) in a bar and then makes the decision to help the war effort by applying for work at the company owned by one of his ex-business partners.

"Pittsburgh" was one of Universal Pictures' patriotic WWII era films that also featured rousing performances by fellow screen legends Marlene Dietrich and Randolph Scott, as well as featuring a rare cameo dramatic role by actor Shemp Howard of Three Stooges fame.

The garment is in excellent condition and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the costume house.
